Mets sign the following players to veteran contracts: Shawn Kelley 3M for 2 years Melvin Upton 1M for 2 years Luis Valbuena 1M for 3 years Since you signed Shawn Kelley as a Veteran Free Agent, he cannot be signed to another contract unless you franchise tag him. Otherwise, his contract expires and he becomes a FA again.

I did not sign Kelley as a Veteran Free Agent, I added him off waivers after the season started.

I did not sign Kelley as a Veteran Free Agent, I added him off waivers after the season started. Difference without a distinction. The point is that he was already a veteran that had been signed to a contract. The current contract has expired, thus you cannot sign him to another contract unless you franchise tag him.

I have the distinction of totally misinterpreting that rule. Thanks for the clarification. The constitution says each team will have two franchise tags, is that 2 per year or do I have to wait for the contract to expire before I can use it again?

You cant have more than 2 outstanding at any given time.
