A top 20 fantasy player (on a $1 contract) and a top 5-10 rookie draft pick for ...
1 player ranked in the top 100 ('Cutch, #100)
1 top 50 prospect (Hayes, #46)
and 0 draft picks?
What is the upside for Marlins?
I have no say - I'm just posing the question.

My feeling was that the Marlins took over a roster that was in a sad state. He needs multiple players just to make himself legal. He gets a free Cutch, a top 50 prospect that'll be top 20 by the all-star break (I think Hayes will be a monster), another prospect that will be top 100 by the end of the season in Mitchell, a 1B who will hit 30+ HR for the next 4 or 5 years, and a couple of other guys who will be MLB regulars.
I've spoken with Marlins and he just doesn't put much weight into draft picks. Even less weight on younger prospects. He wants guys who will hit the majors soon or who will already be there. I think this is a reasonable haul for just 2 years of Stanton, who didn't exactly light the AL on fire last year. You or I wouldn't have made this trade possibly if we were the Marlins, but I don't think it's egregious.

I have to agree with Jordan here. I had to look at this trade a few times and my head is still crooked looking at it. I don't mind him selling stanton. But what's the point when you're selling your most valuable asset going forward. Your top 5 pick. That's like the Knicks selling Porzingis and their Top 5 lottery pick (Zion) for fillers.

its a sell high buy low approach... he need to fill squad, i think its a decent trade...only miss is his 1st round pick could have yielded more in another move not paired with Stanton..a 2nd rounder would make more sense but thats just me

@matt and @dan -
I'm definitely not in the business of telling other owners how to build their teams (prospects/picks is not everyone's cup of tea). I'm just trying to advocate for our newest owner -- why trade your star player ($1), and arguably your most-valuable future asset to "fill a roster". And even if that was always the intent, why not post on the trade block to gauge value and/or other offers, especially being brand new to the league? Are we really setting new owners up for success by saying "it's cool to trade your best player and your first round pick for some decent players and roster filler?"
Marlins inherited a pretty bad roster situation, and it's going to take some work to dig out of that hole. It's important to understand how your assets are valued around the league, so you can make the best moves possible. I don't think we're doing Marlins any favors by defending the logic.
The trade happened, it was agreed on by two teams, it received enough votes to pass. If this were two veteran owners, I wouldn't say anything, but roster-building can be difficult/confusing/intimidating when your first join. I was just wanted to have the conversation, for Marlins' sake.

I think the 1st round pick was excessive in this deal also, but the trade is within the realm of acceptance. It boggles my mind that so many teams trade those picks on what seems like a whim, while others treat it like gold. Huge disparity on value there.
Too add on to Jordans train of thought of advocating for the new members. I think its a bit unseemly to pepper the new guy for trades when they just join the league. I hate that part of fantasy baseball, and I dont know that its the case with this trade either, but I know its happened in the past. Don't really know how I would fix it either. Just know that this is a complicated league and understanding all the variables ( example-top player like Stanton AND on 1 million dollar contract is super valuable) is pretty much impossible for a new member to grasp. That's my 2 cents on the matter anyway.

Cutch and Cron together will outproduce Stanton. And it fills my 1b spot that I had a backup in. I'm not trying to build a teenage prospect team that will lose every game this year. I'm building a team that will be competitive this year and hopefully many years to come. Yeah Stanton's contract was cheap, but I have so much cap space and no players at all. I saw this trade as a trade to make my 25 man roster just as good if not better and add some guys to the farm team that I don't have because of the last owner.
