I know i'm not Kyle, but I took a stab at some preseason rankings/projections. For the record, i did not proof read or read through anything a second time, so if there's any nonsense or stupid ass projections, it is what it is. Enjoy.
2023 BSGM Preseason Projections
NL East
Nationals - It’s hard to bet against this team that Terron has put together. When i say this team is top heavy, i mean TOP HEAVY. There are stars at several positions here and I don’t think there is any argument that this is the best OF in the league. But all of a sudden there are some question marks with this team. 3B and SS leave you wanting more and the pitching isn’t as deep as it once was. I think Terron still wins this division handedly, but it’s maybe not as sure a thing as in the past couple years.
Pirates - Johnny is building a solid team here. There’s youth, there’s talent, there’s intrigue, there’s upside. Tough to be stuck behind Terron in this division, but i think this team will definitely challenge for a playoff spot and has the youth and momentum to maintain this for a few years.
Guardians - a VERY solid top 4 for the pitching staff highlights this team. There’s some hitting here, but after that it’s…not great Bob. This season might unfortunately be more of the same for Jeremy, struggling to get to .500 baseball. It would be really cool Jeremy if you flipped one of those pitchers my way, but I guess I won’t hold it against you if you don’t…
Phillies - Matt came in and decided to do a total rebrand and a total teardown. Formerly the Mets, this was a team that saw success, but was long overdue for a tune up and had started to fall from great to ok to meh. There were still some pieces on this team, but most of them are no longer there as this team heads in a different direction. There’s some prospect talent with this team now, and there’s been a lot of activity in the FA market. Will Matt have success moving some of these short team deals at the deadline to bring in more youth? We’ll have to see how things go with this stringent ass league (not salty at all from having trouble selling at the deadline before), but there may be a few pieces here to plug holes on a contender come deadline time.
Marlins - Chris somehow has the Chourio trifecta. Definitely not the most noteworthy thing about this team, but one of the first things I saw looking at the spreadsheet so I had to comment. As intended, the MLB team is probably going to be a bit rough here and most likely scraping the scrap heap (that’s a weird saying), but this MiLB team has a LOT to be excited about. Prospects don’t win championships, but if at least a couple of these guys work out this team has the makings to make some waves in a few years. The key will be patience here unless Chris decides to make moves when another team enters teardown mode.
NL West
Dodgers - It’s hard to bet against this team that Cory has put together (is there an echo in here?). When i say this team is top heavy, i mean TOP HEAVY (ok now we’re getting carried away). While Terron has the big boppers, I think Cory has the more well rounded team. The only knock is that the pitching is a bit on the older side, so there’s some risk of how everyone holds up. Like Terron, i’m not sure if this team is as strong as last year, but I still think Cory will run away with the division.
Braves - It’s hard to bet against this team that Cory has put together. Wait what’s that? Kyle actually runs this team? Oh…well…that’s not what i’ve heard, but for preseason projection purposes we’ll pretend. Like Cory though, this is a pretty well rounded team, but there’s also some clear gaps in the offense and not a ton of quality pitching depth. Some things need to go Kyle’s way, but I think this is a team that could make some noise.
Diamondbacks - One of my many Matt counterparts. And like me, is sometimes indecisive with the direction of his team. What looked like a rebuild (or a refresh as some like to call it) has looked like it’s turned towards trying to compete with a couple trades and FA signings. There’s definitely pieces here to have an alright season, and I definitely see improvements over last year. There’s still some pieces that can be moved if Matt decides to make a few more moves, and if all of the pieces come together this team could make some noise as a wild card team.
Padres - Harry’s team has the makings of a good team, but i’m not sure if there’s enough to be a great team. It’s hard to say any bad things about this team since there’s a good amount of good players, but it just seems to be lacking the upside that Kyle or Matt have. Outside of Cory this is a weird division and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if I ate my words on this ranking and Harry brings this team to second in the division and dabbles with a playoff spot. Don’t get me wrong, there’s several guys on this team I want (Harry we might have to talk), but in a league with some juggernauts, i’m not sure if “good” is good enough.
Cubs - Another team that saw some neglect from a previous owner, Chad is putting in some work to turn things around. Unfortunately though, I feel like this team is heading down the “good” path as well. There’s a team here for sure that also has some pieces in the MiLB waiting in the wings to help reinforce, but the MLB team also has some aging players that just aren’t doing it anymore. I fully expect this team to be better than last year, but i think ends up falling in the middle of the pack, getting beat up still by the top teams, but getting some much needed wins against the rebuilding teams.
AL East
White Sox - In the time it took me to copy and paste everything to post the rankings/projections, i’ve already gotten 3 offers, one offer canceled, and a final message explaining how Kyle Tucker is trash and only worth a 2nd round pick. That said, Mike has put together a very solid team. A team that likes to yo-yo between compete and rebuild (sometimes multiple times in the same season), this team currently looks strongly in the “compete” category. This is probably the best pitching staff in the league (my 1000 yard stare kicks in as i think about my covid year rotation and all of the success they should have had), and there’s a solid offense to back it up as well. If Mike keeps the band together, this team should make some noise.
Red Sox - Hitting heavy with some pitching to boot. Without looking at past seasons (because i’m too lazy to look), I feel like Darren wins the award for most consistently good team. There’s always talent here, he brings in youth, he makes smart deals. I don’t think I can say enough about how Darren runs his team and if I needed to pick the best owner in the league, i’d say Darren gets the award. With all that said, i think this is one of the “weaker” teams he has had. This is definitely still a playoff team, but maybe not as elite in years past.
Blue Jays - Dan gets punished here for being in probably our toughest division in the league. Year in and year out there’s 2-3 teams at least who make some noise here and are legitimate contenders. Elite pitching, very well rounded hitting, in most other divisions he probably finishes 2nd, but this division will beat itself up. There’s not a lot of bad to say about this team, but if we had to nit pick (because writing all of this gives me the chance to nit pick) Dan might be hurt by not enough depth? Idk, it’s a little bit of a stretch, but I can only jerk off this division so much.
Orioles - Why is the record player broken? You may have heard similar before, but im most other divisions Justin probably brings this team to a 3rd place finish with the possibility of making waves for a wild card spot. Unfortunately he’s in the AL East and gets punished by the bloodbath that ensues. Solid hitting but a lack of quality pitching is what will most likely do this team in. The makings of a great team here, and if Justin can find a way to make a couple big moves, could turn this team into a true contender.
Yankees - lol you’re bad. More or less what comes to mind when I look at Jordan’s MLB team. But then I look at his MiLB team and cry myself to sleep knowing i’ll never have as many nice shiny prospects as he does. Even when i’m trying to find deep sleepers Jordan already has them (someone confirm that his MiLB roster is actually 36 slots and not 76 slots). Jordan has a strong bet to be the worst team in the league, which is his goal, but the future sure is bright here. Similar to Chris, Jordan can accelerate his timeline if he decides to make some moves.
AL West
Astros - If Cory and Terron are 1a and 1b, I think Jason probably is 2. This team is sold, young, and going to make noise for a while. The only major knock against this team is they don’t have the depth of elite pitching that others have, but this lineup can compete with the best of them. Unfortunately i’m stuck in this division, so i’m not looking forward to having to deal with this for a while. My only hope is a couple years from now everyone becomes too expensive and parts have to get sold off, but otherwise this is one of the top teams.
Angels - Like the real life Angels, this team has had quality players and has looked poised to compete, but hasn’t fully been able to get over the hump. This is a veteran team with solid hitting, and some good pitching to boot. If the pieces all come together for Dave, this is a good team that can give Jason a run for his money. Dave continues to find value players to keep his window open and stay competitive. I think this team still has at least a few more years in it before things start to get ugly, and it may without a lot of youth.
Mariners - idk somehow i’m going to get screwed over with some weird shit happening to my team. A team that was in a refresh, they decided they were bored with that and went to compete mode. I think there’s a lot to like about this team, I like a lot of the youth that’s in the wings for my team and they should hopefully be able to plug holes where needed. Unfortunately i’m going to hit myself with the “good” but not “great” line. There’s definitely the parts here to make noise and compete, but this division is the AL East lite and there’s a lot of good competition.
Twins - Another team that was left stagnating with an old owner, Mario has come in and put together a solid and respectable team. There are a lot of good and some great players here, but there’s also a few holes. I think Mario gets punished from being in a tougher division and if he were in one of the NL division this team might play more (yeah look at me throwing shade at the NL). You may have heard this before, but this team might perhaps be in the “good but not great” category. Realistically this Mario, Dave, and myself will probably be in a pretty tight fight for 2nd and hoping one of us can sneak in as a wild card spot since those are going to be tough to find in the AL.
Rangers - Joe’s team isn’t a bad team, but I think he’s on the outside looking in at the race for a wild card spot. Some FA signings have helped fill some holes, and there’s talent on this team, but there’s not enough top talent here to truly make waves. Without a lot of pieces to move, i’m not sure if there’s enough moves that can be made in order to make a true competitor here. Tear it down Joe, tear it down! (one less team i have to compete with for a wild card spot ideally). I say this all, but a couple things go Joe’s way and he could end up with that 2nd place spot too.
