Pirates trade Michael Harris II OF PIT
Phillies trade Pablo Lopez P MIN Jake Meyer OF HOU
Pirates conditionally release A Chapman P PIT
Thanks Matt for the easy trade talks today… I gave you a couple options and we went from there. My concern was covering CF and Meyer helps fill the void. Since I was already paying Lopez’s contract from the previous trade, the money will work.

I’ve been busy apparently. Phillies agree. With my contention window, bats are far safer than arms right now. And Harris has been one of the unluckiest hitters in the league. Made sense to acquire him for this cost. Thank you as always Johnny!

Puts PIT over cap - will need to make room

$4.40, specifically. Will work if PHI sends cap space.

Jordan, I think PIT was already covering Lopez's salary for this year

There's no such thing as literally "paying a player's salary". When teams say that, they mean they're sending cap space to cover the cost of the salary. There's no mechanism in the spreadsheet that allows for salary to move with a player. They're independent of one another. You trade the player AND cap space - two separate line items.

Appreciate the explanation. I am good sending the cap space then; no problem at all.

Same trade as above. Except. Lopez salary is 12M. When you take Lopez salary away from Matt’s team, his spreadsheet should show a credit of 12M. Take that credit(12m) put it on PIT cap adjustment( which is probably what Jordan did last week when i traded Lopez to Philly. Otherwise, that trade shouldn’t have gone through cause he didn’t have the cap space to cover Lopez salary). That 12M will even out the spreadsheet to make both teams the same salary prior to the trade.

I processed the trade with $5 mil going from PHI to PIT to ensure both teams remain under cap. Thanks.

To reiterate, cap money doesn't follow players. It has to be traded separately.
