This humor regarding Fowler to Japan does bring up an interesting situation. Now that we are to the point in this league where contracts and salaries matter, how do we handle players that retire or head off to play in foreign leagues? Are contracts for such players simply void (and cap money returned to owner) once they sign in a foreign league or announce retirement?

No. If you sign a player, you run the risk of them retiring or moving to another country. Just as an injury does not preclude you from having to continue to pay a player, neither does any other circumstance.
With that being said, in version 1 of this league, I made a huge trade for Oscar Taveras. His tragic ending, while very sad, really screwed my team. I believe a team should be able to petition the mods if they so choose for something very extreme like that, but a run of the mill retirement does not fall under that.
